Why This Reference Exists
Old printed directories do not replace Piqua's present record systems. A parcel record is kept by the Miami County Auditor, recorded instruments are held by the Miami County Recorder, and voter information has separate Ohio access rules. Piqua Public Library's Local History and Genealogy Department preserves the historical side, including city and telephone directories documented from 1911 through 1986. The goal is to point a family-history, property-history, or public-record question toward the correct custodian before time is spent in the wrong office.
What Is Available Here
- Search paths by question: the street directory for address-keyed records, the directory book for historical volumes, and the resident lookup for a one-person verification trail
- Custodian information: the Auditor, Recorder, Board of Elections, court offices, vital-record custodians, and Piqua Public Library Local History
- Practical methods: ways to follow an address, interpret a directory entry, and compare a household across dated sources
- Access boundaries: Ohio Public Records Act procedures, restricted records, and the fallback routes when a record is not in an online index
